Descripción
Sumario:Sporting talent is a manifestation of high abilities and must be identified to be promoted. The objective of this study was to create an evaluation index of the sporting potential of schoolchildren. 1064 students of both sexes aged 13 to 17 years, from a military school, performed a battery of multidimensional tests. Teachers evaluated their students regarding intangible aspects and the expectation of sporting success in the future. The Sports Potential Index was composed by the sum of the percentile values of the following indicators: strength, speed, aerobic resistance, perceived competence, intangible aspects, and potential evaluated by the teacher, with a range from 0 to 100. 11.2% of the boys (n=70) and 9.4% of the girls (n=40) were identified as sporting talents (Index>75). The index's internal consistency (r>0.70) and diagnostic stability 12 and 24 months after the first assessment (ICC>0.75) were high. Students selected for the Friendship Games (construct validity) and those who won medals (criterion validity) had a higher Sports Potential Index when compared to non-selected students and non-medalists. In view of the results, it was concluded that the Sporting Potential Index is valid and reliable for estimating the sporting potential of schoolchildren between 13 and 17 years old of both sexes, constituting an innovative, useful and easily applied scientific tool in practice for the identification of sports talents at school.
