Descripción
Sumario:The use of History and Sociology in the studies of International Relations (IR) has shaped several specific approaches throughout the development of the discipline—through the works of Edward Carr, for example, as well as within a post-war French tradition, stemming from Raymond Aron and Marcel Merle. The synthesis of these two disciplines, through the establishment of Historical Sociology (HS) in the late 1970s, provided significant analytical gains for the study of international phenomena, prompting many of these sociologists to seek interactions with the field of IR for the understanding of macro-historical processes. Thus, this article aims to understand to what extent HS can contribute to the field of IR, by presenting a feasible alternative to static and ahistorical understandings of the discipline. We will also seek to demonstrate the importance of HS as a theoretical-methodological approach capable of contributing to the proliferation of the field of the History of IR.
