| Summary: | Drawing upon the analysis of the documentary 108: Cuchillo de Palo (Renate Costa, 2010), we explore how the director aims to capture glimpses of her uncle Rodolfo's evanescent existence during the Paraguayan dictatorship. Through his absence, and conveying testimonies, documents, and reminiscences, she endeavors to piece together fragments of his story. Moreover, we underscore the significance of the interplay and confrontation between Renate and her father's perspective, which encapsulates the dynamics of a family structure molded by the repressive background shaping the country's political and cultural life. We look to explore the aesthetic and political potential of the vestiges and gaps as components of a documentary poetics. Consequently, our objective is to construct an interpretation based on the traces presented in the film. To achieve this, we will examine the director's strategic choices and how they respond to the unique conditions that shape the cinematic discourse. |
