| Sumario: | This study seeks to analyze the creation of the Museu Histórico Nacional (MHN), as part of celebrations of the Centenary of the Brazilian Independence, which took place in the Federal Capital, Rio de Janeiro in 1922. The Centenary of the Independence comes at a time when the political debate focused around the theme of national identity. Therefore, the creation of the MHN was related to the coeval political debate, looking to define from its exposition the ideias of national identity and memory. These definitions had great influence of Gustavo Barroso, the founder and Museu Histórico Nacional”Ÿs first director, and his idea of “Culto da Saudade”. Thus, based on the analysis from journals, the annals of the MHN, chronicles and newspapers of the period we had try to relate the creation and structuring of the MHN, as part of celebrations of the Centenary of the Brazilian Independence, with the debate about national identity. And also demonstrate that exposition as it had been developed by Gustavo Barroso attempted to present a specific view of history and national identity |
