| Sumario: | The text “Speleologia” was published by Antonio Olyntho dos Santos Pires, in the work Geographia do Brasil Commemorativa do Primeiro Centenario da Independencia (1822-1922). In a time of major transformations, the proposal was to scientifically treat caves in the light of “Speleologia”, following the example of Europe and the USA, supplanting the theological and superstitious views of the colonial past about caves. Pires cited the works of Peter Lund and Ricardo Krone, in caves in Minas Gerais and São Paulo, respectively, as examples of rationality and objectivity that he wanted for the country. Thus, “Speleologia” was a contribution to lead Brazil to the condition of a modern and civilized country. Considering the context of the publication and Pires' point of view, it can be deduced that “Speleologia” would be a kind of “place of memory” (Nora, 2008), that is, a material and/or immaterial object, considered a key piece. in the constitution of republican national memory. |
