Sumario:This paper aims to present aspects related to the variation of addressing forms in familiar contexts. The analysis is based on a sample of França Júnior´s plays written in the second half of 19th century. Assuming that language behaviour is not merely cognitive and inspired from Carlo Ginzburg´s reflections on the “huntsman´s paradigma”, we focus on the context utterance in order to examine points-clues, signs which allow us to decipher the symbolic value of addressing forms. Methodologically, we extend to linguistic Norbert Elias´s proposal of a sociological analysis based on comparison on grand scale. This procedure leads us to link ways of speaking to its social and affective or emotional dimensions, allowing the investigation to evaluate the theoretical correlation between address strategies and stylistic variation.
