| Summary: | In this article,we intend to discuss: first,the possible similarities between the sociologies of Gilberto Freyre and Anthony Giddens in the critique of the naturalist-methodological research model; second,how these authors defend the use of tools such as literature or contact with common sense for the empirical analysis of social life. With regard to the Brazilian sociologist, we will be guided by the process of consolidation of sociologyas an academic discipline in Brazil and by the question of specialization. Regarding Anthony Giddens, we will try to extract from Structuration Theory, as an attempt to reconcile agency and structure, reflections on the limits of methodological naturalism and the role of common language for social research activity, within the interpretivist orientation he shares with Freyre. |
