Sumario:Amidst the complex political-social turmoil that lent the year of 1968 in Brazil a unique character, a group emerged who shook the whole cultural scene, forcing it to rearrange itself completely, in aesthetic and ideological terms. This text identifies three well outlined artistic trends in 68: the avantgarde, the populist and the tropicalia and compares them to Columbus’ three caravels, celebrated in a Caribbean song that Caetano Veloso e Gilberto Gil recorded in that year. Today, Tropicália, as a cultural movement, still inspires us due to the disposition of its young participants to stand up to a political scenario that seemed to offer no perspective of change.
