Sumario:Based on the premise that a model of coherence emerges in Graciliano Ramos’ work, that also explains real (extraliterary) socio-historical phenomena, I seek, in this article, to examine the function of the school in the structure of the novel São Bernardo. In the analysis, I highlight episodes of the narrative which expose Paulo Honório’s treatment of the teachers Padilha and Madalena, and I relate these episodes to the general dynamics of the novel, in which the school is a key political instrument in a social domination structure in decline (Coronelismo). KEYWORDS: Teaching; School; Graciliano Ramos; São Bernardo.
