Resumo:Introduction: The Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a disease that manifests after infection of the human body by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). It is a silent disease that has great relevance to the elderly population. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the knowledge about HIV / AIDS in elderly users of the SUS in Garanhuns / PE.Methodology: It is a qualitative descriptive exploratory survey conducted in three Family Health Units (USF) located in the urban area of Garanhuns / PE. Data were collected from June 2014 through interviews with 06 senior citizens covered by the Family Health Strategy (FHS).Results: The results showed that older adults had little knowledge on the subject, some discriminate against the person with HIV / AIDS, others associate the disease to cancer and even those who knew the importance of using condoms to prevent contamination by the virus, reported have never used. Conclusion: The results point to the need of the Family Health Strategy to provide actions to the elderly public, aiming to guide them on HIV / AIDS and other STDs, through health education promotion and debating issues related to sexuality.
