| Summary: | The objective is to evaluate the knowledge and practice of condom use by the elderly in HIV / AIDS prevention. Descriptive and exploratory study, with a quantitative approach, carried out in 5 nightclubs in the urban area of Teresina, Piauí. A total of 383 elderly people aged 60 and over participated. Data were collected through a sociodemographic questionnaire, knowledge and practice of HIV / AIDS prevention, followed by descriptive and inferential analysis. Preliminary results showed that 52.4% of the participants were female, 73.3% were 65 years of age and 53.7% were divorced. Regarding condom knowledge and use, 97.9% revealed that HIV / AIDS transmission can occur without the use of condoms; 13.8% pointed out that transmission can occur through kissing; 39.4% always use condoms; 19.8% never use condoms and 61.8% justified not using them for having sex with the same partner. It was found that although most confirmed to be well informed about the disease, there was a great deal of divergence in the knowledge of the forms of transmission, thus demonstrating fragility in knowledge. Thus, it is extremely necessary that health professionals establish actions aimed at the orientation of this population, in order to promote sexual practice among the elderly in a more secure way and free of any damages to health. |
