| Resumo: | This paper presents some empirical results about the history of the syntax of Portuguese clitics that corroborate the hypothesis that there were three grammatical stages in the history of european portuguese, as proposed by Galves (1996). We will focus on the phenomenon of interpolation of phrasal constituents between the clitic and the verb in texts written by Portuguese authors born between the fifteenth and the nineteenth century, discussing previous works such as Martins (1994), Ribeiro (1995 ) and Fiéis (2001), that investigated the same phenomenon in older texts. KEYWORDS: Clitics. Interpolation. Syntactic change. Periodization. Portuguese grammars. |
