Descripción
Sumario:This article tries to understand how the monopoly of the funeral transport service evolved in the city of Sao Paulo between 1855 and the end of the 19th century. In 1856, the State Legislative Assembly of Sao Paulo granted the funeral service monopoly, for a 15-year period, to the businessman Joaquim Marcellino da Silva. After the contract was over, the Assembly, after some debates, chose to grant the prerogative to the Santa Casa de Misericórdia ("Holy House of Mercy") on the grounds that it would not speculate over prices. After the concession, the fellowship "outsourced" the funeral transport, the context of action, and the controversies involved, the two agents are based on the minutes of the municipal chamber of São Paulo, the annals of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of São Paulo, and periodicals from that time.
