Descrição
Resumo:This present study aims at analyzing the economic behavior of elderly people who live in the AMUSEP region (Association of Municipalities of the Northern Paraná). To this end, we estimated a multinomial logit model posing as response variable the following categories: pure retired; pure workers; retired workers; elderly with other sources of income and elderly without income. The logit binary model has often been used to estimate variables that explain the participation of elderly in the labor market, particularly when choices involve three or more categories. This study was based on the 2010 Census Data and the National Sample Survey (PNAD) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The econometric results of the multinomial logit model confirmed the influence of socio-demographic and economic variables in the activities of the elderly. It is expected that these results can support the revision of public policy targeted to elderly, since the policymakers have not always considered the differences observed in the economic behavior of elderly people. The change in the Brazil Age Structure is evident and remarkable. Probably the current demographics profile will generate new demands by the civil society due to the higher share of elderly people participating on the population. As a consequence, the differences in these increased demands should be better evaluated since they present expressive variations with respect to culture, region and society. It is therefore up to the leaders and policy makers consider this information in the formulation and implementation of public policies in order to accommodate the demands of the elderly.
