| Sumario: | Open access has been increasing significantly the visibility of current research. Thus, researchers have pressured publishers to remove barriers for this access. Visibility has become a crucial issue, not only for researchers, but also for their institutions, since spending could be only justified if its results are widely accessible. However, this new vision on the validity of scientific publication challenges established models of scientific communication, especially regarding the traditional roles for its actors and formats of scientific publication. From this perspective, the institutional repositories may constitute an instrument of rearrangement, enhancing visibility of scientific literature, researchers and institutions, going beyond the publicity mechanisms used to date. This study tries to demonstrate the visibility provided by a repository of scientific production of a higher education institution, through access and download analysis. The developments incorporated by the statistics of Lume - Digital Repository of Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, are presented with the purpose of facilitating and promoting its use by researchers and managers. It shows the mechanisms available in Lume that contribute to its consolidation as a tool for management of research, by allowing more precise analysis regarding visibility of research available at the institution. It concludes that institutional repositories can help a lot in the new processes of scientific communication. |
