Descripción
Sumario:In the last decade, institutional repositories and open access have generated considerable interest within the academic community. The aim of this article is to analyze diverse concepts and functions assigned to institutional repositories over time, as well as their role in the open access movement, especially with regard to enhancing the visibility of academic materials in general. This paper consists of a critical overview of the literature on institutional repositories, with particular emphasis on repository functionality, and arrives at three definitions of the strategic the functions of repositories as assets for: in-house archiving; motors for re-conceptualizing scholarly publications; and as broader digital infrastructure. These definitions are then employed to analyze the current state of institutional repositories and suggest lines for further research.
