| Sumario: | Plutarch (Chaeronea, 46-120 AD) and Bruni (Arezzo, 1370-1444 AD) dedicated themselves to heroic biographical narrative, which had the function of educating the reader based on the lives of illustrious figures. Both wrote, among others, the life of Cicero, presenting, however, different points of view. Plutarch narrates Cicero's virtues and emphasizes dubious aspects of his life and his vices. Bruni narrates the same aspects. Nevertheless,He justifies the orator's weaknesses, giving Cicero's love for the Roman Republic and his “infallible” ethics as a reason for them. In this way,we present the course of the biographical narrative in Antiquity and the Middle Ages and show, through excerpts from the works Parallel lives – by Plutarch – and Cicero Novus – by Leonardo Bruni – how the account of Cicero's life was received and reproduced, maintaining a didactic function . In order to achieve the objective, we submit texts by theorists of aesthetics reception, such as Anastasia Bakogianni, Wolfgang Iser and Hans Robert Jauss.
