Descripción
Sumario:This article, derived from the presentation at the congress Abralin em Cena 2021, has as its main theme the reception of the linguistic thought of European Renaissance humanism in Portuguese America, a context in which was published the Arte de gramática da língua mais usada na costa do Brasil (1595) by S. José de Anchieta, SJ (1534-1597). The anchietan grammar was probably wrote between the years 1554 and 1556, in the captaincy of São Vicente, and describes the language of the Tupinambá indigenous people, for catechetical and missionary purposes, a context that is analyzed at the beginning of the text. In this way, the article dialogues with Swiggers' theoretical-methodological model, for the Historiography of Linguistics and Missionary Linguistics. For the interpretation of the anchietan grammar and its description of the indigenous language of the coast of Brazil, we selected in this study the second and third paragraphs of the first chapter “das Letras”, analyzing the intertextuality with the 16th century work of Marthurin Cordier, in relation to the use of accents in Latin language. The purpose of the comparison is to demonstrate the use of accents by Anchieta and the dialogue of his work with humanistic texts of his time.
