Rev. de Letras, Fortaleza, v. 34, n. 1, p. 17-26, jan./jun. 2015.This paper ponders theoretically over landscape, a question that turned out to be a considerable challenge in the field of contemporary human sciences and social practices, as well as for modern art and poetry. This is a notion that places itself, historically and structurally, between a symbolic thought on Place, which dominated classical Antiquity and Middle Age, and a scientific knowledge of space that develops till modern times. From Romanticism on, especially lyric poetry has trans-formed landscape in a place of expression of sensibility. As a counterpart, art and literature in the XXth century tended to deviate from the outside world to explore their own resources and means of expression. Thus, landscape seems to have lost its place in the esthetic scene, which is not true, since it keeps on inspiring lots of artists and writers. Controversial by nature, the idea of landscape arises a series of questions, like the concepts of sensation and perception.O presente artigo reflete teoricamente acerca da paisagem, questão que se tornou um considerável desafio no campo das ciências humanas e das práticas sociais contemporâneas, bem como para a arte e para a poesia modernas. Trata-se de uma noção que se situa, histórica e estruturalmente, entre um pensamento simbólico do Lugar, que dominou a Antiguidade clássica e a Idade Média, e um conhecimento científico do espaço que se desenvolve até aos Tempos modernos. A partir do Romantismo, notadamente a poesia lírica transformou a paisagem em um lugar de expressão da sensibilidade. Em contrapartida, a arte e a literatura no século XX tenderam a se desviar da representação do mundo exterior para explorar os recursos próprios a seus meios de expressão. Como tal, a paisagem parece ter perdido o seu lugar na cena estética, o que não é exato, uma vez que continua a inspirar muitos artistas e escritores.
