| Resumo: | Mental calculation is a task or activity that uses cognitive operations inherent to the psychic functionality of the subject of the action. Objective: to research operational particularities that differentiate students with or without learning difficulties in mental calculus. Participants: 550 subjects of both sexes, age range 7 - 15 years, divided into two contingents - 275 with and 275 without learning difficulties. Methodological instruments: psychological interview and observation, and mental calculation in increasing and decreasing modalities, with a record of mistakes made and time spent. Results: Students with learning difficulties make more mistakes and spend more time, with statistically significant differences between the two contingents. Conclusion: Students with learning difficulties indicate deficient or insufficient development of cognitive operations, namely the abstract function of deductive and inductive reasoning. This is reflected in insufficient capacity for anticipation and predictability of results, in view of the requirements inherent to the real complexity of the task. |
