Sumario:In this article we deal with the Italian school at the time of the unification of Italy and its importance for the consolidation of the Italian language. At a time when most Italians did not speak and did not know the standard Italian language - they were literally illiterate - it was a political, grammatical, linguistic and cultural challenge to make it a common language through school performance. We discuss here the main issues of this scenario, in which the school assumed the role of disseminating the official language of the new country.
