Resumo:The present study aims to discuss about the dropout in Brazilian universities from the perspective of its concept, measurement, causes and consequences. This is an exploratory bibliographic study. It was found that the dropout in universities still needs greater precision in its calculation and concept. Among the causes of dropout, financial, academic, and psychological and individual aspects stand out. The research for alternatives to reduce students’ dropout rates has long occupied institutional and governmental agendas and produces public policies with results that are still below expectations. It is concluded that the effective decrease in the dropout rates will only happen with the improvement in the conditions of permanence of students.
