| Sumario: | The study on the economic transformation of Mauá, a municipality in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, aims to investigate the transition from an economy based on porcelain manufacturing to the petrochemical sector, analyzing the impacts of this change on the local economic geography. The research seeks to understand the factors driving this transition and its effects on infrastructure, employment, and residents' quality of life. The methodology includes a literature review on economic geography concepts and a historical analysis of Mauá's economic evolution, focusing on the pre- and post-emancipation periods. This approach enables a critical examination of the social and economic implications of industrial change, particularly in the context of deindustrialization and increased social vulnerability faced by the city. The conclusion highlights the need for public policies aimed at economic diversification and entrepreneurship promotion, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors. Recommendations include participatory urban planning and the creation of a favorable regulatory environment, such as land regularization and risk area monitoring, to revitalize the economy and foster more sustainable and balanced development for the municipality. The research underscores the importance of understanding these dynamics for urban planning that effectively addresses local demands. |
