Descripción
Sumario:This article discusses the relationship between Literature and History, and it seeks to verify the implications between the world of forms as shown in the novels and in the world of the past, with the aim of contributing to a better knowledge of the Western sensibility about love and sexuality, as well as prejudices related to race and social class, in the backgrounds of both monarchical Brazil and early 20th-century England. The methodology applied brings together concepts from Veyne, Bann, Frye, Bosi, among others, on the use of fictional writers’ literary material by historians and vice versa. Two novels were studied: The Guarani, by Brasilian author José de Alencar, and The Virgin and the Gypsy, by British author D.H. Lawrence. The results obtained demonstrate that the authors' personality influenced the fictions they created within the circumstances and historical limits of the time in which they lived.
