Sumario:The study aimed to verify the effectiveness ofa treatment based on experimental functional analysis in order to reduce the self-injurious behavior [ SIB ] in a 13 year old adolescent with autism spectrum disorder associated with intellectual disability,whoattended a Brazilian institution.The experimental functional analysis procedure involved exposing the participant alternately to four conditions that could establish occasions for the occurrence of SIB, with the record of frequency of self-injurious responses.The intervention was developedbased on the identification that the participant's SIB was maintained by escapefrom demand. The intervention involvedsome specific non-contingent reinforcement [NCR] procedures,and mand training at school.Experimental functional analysis proceduresshowedto be effective in identifying SIB function,and in fostering its reduction through appropriate procedures.
