| Sumario: | This article focuses on the Formoso stilt village, a pre-colonial archaeological site formed by stilts in the estuarine region of Baixada Maranhense, Brazilian Amazonian. The analysis of the ceramic material from Formoso stilt village revealed technological characteristics of the Incised-Punctate/Arauquinoid Tradition. In this sense, a new geographic frontier is suggested for the dispersion of this Tradition, being Maranhão State the easternmost portion of the expansion of these human groups. Furthermore, the spatial analysis of the settlement showed a linear and a circular area, connected by a stilt bridge, and the study of the artifacts confirmed that the linear area appears to be a ceremonial space while the circular area is residential. The Formoso stilt village presents an unprecedented form of indigenous habitation never before described in Anthropology and Archeology of the Lowlands of South America. |
