| Sumario: | This research aims to show the moral arrangements and techniques of social control of a group of militia members and two security policies: the Destacamento de Polícia Ostensiva (DPO) and the Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora (UPP) in the period from 2007 to 2011 in the Batan favela/RJ. From an ethnographic research of more than three years in the territory, which produced a series of interviews and informal conversations with residents, we argued that in the delimited period there was a militia governance in Batan that brought together legal and illegal militarized forces with the purpose of controlling the morality of residents and curb deviants. In this context, militia and police complemented each other in the management of local order, producing a gray area of action anchored in the same moral project. |
