Sumario:The study facuses, ill the form of a literature review, the hypothesis that the advellt ofthe so-called "post-illdustrial, informatioll society" has moved to a period ofsocio-ecollomic activity alld development that represents a radical departure fromthe "old ways". Within this framework, it stresses the wide-held 1l0tio1l that thedYllamics ofthis llew mode of society favours a type of economic alld social developmelltthat is ecologically more sustainable, principally because the new developmelltparadigm celltres 011illformation and information-related activities. The question ofthe ways that this lIew development paradigm may 01'may not affect the socalled latedevelopillg countries is also addressed.
