Descripción
Sumario:This article presents the results of a Variationist Sociolinguistics study (Labov (2008, [1972]) in line with discursive and pragmatic studies, which aimed to understand the variable use of swearing as a discursive tool. The study was directed at undergraduate students in Literature at a Federal University and carried out with 67 people. The research has a qualitative and quantitative nature and the methodology for data collection, which follows methodological principles of Variationist Sociolinguistics, consisted of a semi-structured questionnaire sent via email and messaging application. The results of the research demonstrate that the majority of the analyzed public has the habit of swearing and that this use, being variable, extends to different contexts, such as in informal conversations, in situations of nervousness and irritation, etc. In addition, it was found that the main functions of swearing, among the participants, are to emphasize the meaning of words and to serve as an escape valve to express emotions.
