Influence of corn genotypes, fertilizer and insecticide on population and damage of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) during two sowing periods

| Sumario: | Experiments were carried out at FCAV/UNESP - Jaboticabal SP Brazil, during 1997-1998 and 1998-1999 agricultural years to analyze the influence of chemical fertilizer and insecticide on population of Spodoptera frugiperda (Noctuidae) in four corn genotypes, Zea mays (Poaceae), during “water” and “dry” seeding periods. Genotypes C-805, C-505, C-125, C-606, C-929 and C-747 were used and experiments were undertaken according to randomized block design with 16 treatments and 4 replications. Attack of S. frugiperda in 10 plants per part was weekly evaluated, based on visual scale of grades; moreover, the number and size of caterpillars were determined. Results showed that genotype C-505 was the least attacked by S. frugiperda, whilst the most attacked were C-805 and C-125. Population and damage were less when C-606 and fertilizer application were associated. Insecticide avoided higher damages and larger numbers of caterpillars in all genotypes. During the “dry” season the application of fertilizer affected only slightly incidence and damage of pest |
