Sumario:Special collections can comprise different types of materials, in diverse formats, and address a wide range of themes. Historically, special collections were associated with rare books; however, social and cultural changes from the first half of the 20th century onward broadened this notion to include collections of materials with potential cultural significance. Drawing on a narrative literature review, this study set out to discuss the concept of special collections within Librarianship. The research adopts a qualitative approach and built its theoretical foundation on national and international information sources, starting with specialized technical dictionaries in Librarianship, definitions from professional bodies, and the article by Greenhalgh and Greenhalgh (2021), in which the authors analyze how special collections are formed in Brazilian libraries. The results show various reasons for creating special collections in libraries, such as document typology; preserving institutional memory or local/regional history; among other factors. It is concluded that any type of library can invest in developing one or more special collections, taking into account its mission, objectives, and user community—and that, ultimately, any library, regardless of type, can create and maintain a special collection focused on institutional memory.
