Resumo:records structural characteristics of their natural language – in Brazil, mostly Libras – characteristics that, to a certain extent, differ from the linguistic structure of Portuguese, which means that, consequently, such writing is not fully accepted in society. One of these characteristics concerns the non-sentential marking of copula verbs (or copulative verbs) – specifically the verbs ser and estar – also known, by Traditional Grammar (GT), as linking verbs. In the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), the copulative verbs ser and estar, in general, are not used, leaving only the subject and the predicate in the surface structure (FELIPE, 1998). In this sense, the present production intends to highlight the non-existence of copular verbs in Libras as a linguistic-structural particularity of Libras naturally reflected in texts written in Portuguese produced by deaf students. To this end, it presents a theoretical discussion supported by Felipe (1998), Oliveira (2020), Capovilla et al. (2019a, 2019b, 2019c), among others, and analyzes essays written by deaf students from selections of the entrance exam of the Letters/Libras course at the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI). With this, it concludes that the non-marking of copulation has clear linguistic-structural motivations: the relationship between the constituents of the sentence occurs through the context of signaling, from resources such as pointing and the direction of the gaze, which are responsible for establishing the meaning of the copulatory constructions, even if such resources are not transported to the written modality, thus causing a particular writing.
