The Jardim the Infância Menino Jesus, founded in 1958, marks the beginning of the educational service of the small children in the city, being intensified after the creation of the Associação de Proteção à Maternidade, Infância e Velhice (Apromiv – Association of Protection of Motherhood, Childhood and Older Age) in 1971. The Movimento de Luta Pró-Creche (MLPC – Movement for Daycares), organized in the 1980s and working in Betim contributed to the achievement of children’s right to education in the 1988 Brazilian Federal Constitution. As a result, an increase is observed in the provision of public early childhood education in the city of Betim over the last years. However, although recognizing the improvements, there are great demands for more investment in the structure of the public network, as well as in the career and training of professionals.O artigo tem como objetivo discutir as políticas para a educação infantil de diferentes governos à frente da prefeitura de Betim, cidade da região metropolitana de Belo Horizonte em Minas Gerais. A metodologia parte de fontes documentais disponíveis em sindicatos, na biblioteca pública da cidade, na prefeitura municipal e na câmara de vereadores. O Jardim de Infância Menino de Jesus, fundado em 1958, marca o início do atendimento educacional das crianças pequenas na cidade, sendo isso intensificado após a criação da Associação de Proteção à Maternidade, Infância e Velhice (Apromiv) em 1971. O Movimento de Luta Pró-Creche (MLPC), organizado na década de 1980 e atuante em Betim, contribuiu para a conquista do direito das crianças à educação na Constituição Federal de 1988. Como resultado, observa-se, nos últimos, um crescimento da oferta de educação infantil pública na cidade de Betim.
