There were documentary and bibliographic research, such as data collection techniques, carried out. In addition to the examination of the concepts of “artifact”, “ethnographic object” and “mentifact”, a brief history of the expansion of the concept paper was made. The results showed that the phases of the ethnographic collection musealization process are interdependent, complementary and define the status of the object as heritage.Trata-se de uma pesquisa de caráter qualitativo para investigar o processo de musealização (aquisição, pesquisa, conservação, documentação e comunicação) a que é submetida a Coleção Etnográfica do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi (MPEG), patrimônio cultural brasileiro. Foram realizadas pesquisas documental e bibliográfica como técnicas de coleta de dados. Foram examinados os conceitos de “artefato”, “objeto etnográfico” e “mentefato”, além de se fazer um breve histórico sobre a ampliação do conceito de documento.
