| Sumario: | This article analyzes the movement of rural sugarcane workers – known as sugarcane cutters – from the Zona da Mata Sul region of Pernambuco to work in the Suape Industrial Port Complex, in order to understand the meanings they attribute to it and the implications for their trajectories. Based on extensive field research conducted between 2013 and 2017 – the period of greatest expression of the movement of sugarcane workers to work in SUAPE –, the data pointed to intense movement in this social fabric, in which workers alternated between employment in Suape and in the sugarcane fields. The article problematizes and describes the profile of these workers who migrated in terms of gender, age, education and origin; characterizes how their insertion in the Suape Complex occurs; analyzes the identity mediations of sugarcane cutters in the face of the change in their condition from rural workers to workers in the industries of Suape and highlights how they perceive the transformations they are experiencing in their ways of life. |
