| Sumario: | In the context of research carried out in the area of Library Science and Information Science, both in Brazil and abroad, thematic treatment of information has been widely addressed. Similarly, librarian practice is subsidized and benefited from research carried out in this field. With the adoption of guidelines that guide the representation of informational objects, the indexing process becomes easier in the information units. In fact, through the use of the indexation policy, the professional can use controlled terms, reducing subjectivity during the process, although this policy is still unknown in many units and information services. In view of this scenario, the present article has as its main theme the indexation process and policy, whose objective is to demonstrate the importance of the elaboration and use of this instrument. For this, the study presents concepts and characteristics of the indexing process and policy; identifies studies that deal with the theme; and analyzes results of published studies on the contributions of this policy. The research is characterized as descriptive, with a qualitative approach, with the application of systematic literature review. From the application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the research sample consisted of 18 articles. With the analysis of the results of these publications, it was possible to verify the importance of this document in an information unit. It was concluded that the policy promotes the reduction of subjectivity and that the elements exhaustiveness and specificity are indispensable in this document, as they enable a representation more adequate to the needs of users. |
