Climate variables were found to be statistically significant, highlighting the importance of incorporating such variables in electricity demand estimations. Simulation results suggest that electricity demand may increase in response to the projected temperature changes. The North and Northeastern regions would experience the highest increases in demand. The South region, which is characterized by milder temperatures, would register a lower increase in electricity consumption.Neste artigo, tem-se por objetivo investigar os determinantes da demanda residencial de energia elétrica no Brasil com ênfase no fator climático. Avalia-se, ainda, por meio de simulações, o impacto das variações de temperatura projetadas pelos modelos climatológicos sobre a demanda de energia elétrica. A estimação do modelo foi realizada com dados estaduais para o período 1991-2008 a partir de uma especificação de painel dinâmico. As variáveis climáticas mostraram-se estatisticamente significativas, evidenciando a importância de se incorporar os fatores climáticos nos estudos empíricos sobre demanda de eletricidade. Os resultados da simulação sugerem que a demanda residencial de energia elétrica poderá aumentar em decorrência da adaptação ao aumento projetado na temperatura. Os maiores aumentos de demanda devem ser observados nas regiões Norte e Nordeste.
