| Sumario: | This paper aims at investigating the determinants of residential electricity demand in Brazil, with an emphasis on the role of climate factors. Additionally, it presents simulation exercises to assess how projected changes in temperature may influence electricity demand. A dynamic panel data model was estimated by using state-level data for the period 1991-2008. Climate variables were found to be statistically significant, highlighting the importance of incorporating such variables in electricity demand estimations. Simulation results suggest that electricity demand may increase in response to the projected temperature changes. The North and Northeastern regions would experience the highest increases in demand. The South region, which is characterized by milder temperatures, would register a lower increase in electricity consumption. |
