| Sumario: | The question of language has become in contemporary philosophy something irrefutable, as we can see from the most recent trends, such as analytical philosophy, discourse ethics and hermeneutics. Hermeneutics, especially by the German philosopher Hans Georg Gadamer, takes seriously the role of language in mediating our access to reality, going beyond a merely instrumental view of it, to the point of recognizing its ontological foundation, insofar as it understands language as “The being that can be understood”. In this sense, we will highlight in Truth and Method, the Christian concept of Verbum, used by Gadamer from the reference to Saint Augustine and São Tomás de Aquino, as fundamental for the understanding of what expresses the historical, contingent and at the same time universal aspect of language. In this context, we will relate the concept of Christian Verbum to such dialectical aspects of language according to Gadamerian hermeneutics. |
