Sumario:On the centenary of the birth of one of Italy’s greatest writers of the second half of the 20th century, we cannot fail to remember Italo Calvino's profound and far-sighted outlook. By retracing the stages of his wide-ranging and versatile literary production, this essay aims to demonstrate how his thought evolved in parallel with the transformations of society, both Italian and world-wide. The author, lucidly reflecting on old and new existential values, offers the reader ever-changing perspectives of “reading” the world and its meaning in which reality, fantasy and science fiction alternate and intertwine in an attempt to shed new light on the “labyrinth” of individual and universal life with its phantasmagorical and indecipherable appearances. The drive for a new and ever-renewed literature, through the filter of ironic detachment, is still hit most valid and topical feature.
