| Sumario: | This article aims to identify the main characteristics of research on democratic school management in basic education in Brazil in the last three decades. A total of 76 articles were analyzed, from a universe of 1817 works on democratic school management published between 1988 and 2022, in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. The analysis led to the division of articles into seven categories: (1) Context impacts on democratic management; (2) Instruments of democratic management; (3) Opposition between democratic management and managerialism; (4) Democratic management and its implications; (5) Implementation proposals; (6) Evaluation and democratic management; (7) Contributions by classical authors. The results show that, despite the abundance of studies on the subject, there is a scarcity of empirical studies that use data collection techniques that show how school management is, in practice, instead of how it should be. The academic production classified in these seven categories leads to the concentration of researches around two major axes: an attachment to legal devices, as if the possibilities of building a democratic management were restricted to legal instruments, such as a political-pedagogical project, councils school and student unions; the tension between political-ideological conceptions that can be represented by the binary neoliberalism and democracy, conservative and progressive conceptions, managerialism and participatory management. Some research agendas are proposed as a possibility to expand the themes in the field. |
