Sumario:National leaders travel abroad. Among the objectives of these trips is the strengthening of economic relations with other nations. This study aims to verify if the official visits held by the Brazilian presidents contribute to an increase in the flow of Brazilian exports to the countries visited. By using the gravity model of trade, we analyze 347 international trips of Brazilian presidents to 85 countries, covering the period from 1985 to 2016. The result obtained by the estimation of the model evidences a positive and statistically significant approximate impact of 33% on Brazilian exports as a result of presidential trips, indicating that, even with the costs involved, the presence of the president and his delegation may be more efficient than the remote contact, thus collaborating for the entry of Brazilian products and services in the markets of the nations visited.
