Sumario:This dissertation reports the results of a study investigating the social psychological process of collective identity building among women engaged in the Afro-Brazilian Womens Movement. Analyses were based on structured interviews with active members of the movement, primary documental sources, and a literature review of various sociological and psycho-sociological models of social movements. The dissertation discusses the construction of the movement at the national level, its internal conflicts and networks with other social movements such as the anti-racist and the feminist movements, its impact at the institutional political level, and finally, the activists academic production and involvement in social practical action.
