Sumario:Here, we argue that the study of inconsistency toleration in the social sci-ences -particularly the toleration of contradictions between theory and obser-vation-, can be revealing about the mechanisms that underlie the rational use of inconsistent information. In order to do so, we provide a typology of con-tradictions between theory and observation. We emphasize some of the most important features of these contradictions and we argue that they play a sig-nificant role for determining the inference mechanisms that allow for the ra-tional toleration of contradictions. We illustrate this with cases from econo-mics.
