| Sumario: | This paper presents the planning, execution, and data analysis of an asynchronous online focus group conducted via WhatsApp, used in a thesis in the field of Regional Development. The focus group took place in 2022, during the Covid-19 pandemic. The topic addressed with the informants was the traditional food of the community to which they belong. The study aimed to find evidence of the presence in their lives of derivatives of Streuselkuchen — a traditional food among the descendants of German immigrants in Brazil. As a tool for obtaining primary data, focus groups are common in Social Sciences. However, the online and asynchronous form of this technique are not widely used in general, and not in Regional Development either. The group consisted of residents of Domingos Martins, a city in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. It was possible to understand the dietary dynamics of the informants, as well as analyze the strengths and weaknesses of this type of methodological tool. It was concluded that there is at least one food derived from Streuselkuchen in their dietary habits—the Simftbroud. As for the practice of this method, advantages were observed, such as the possibility of reaching geographically distant participants. However, access to smartphones and skill in using this type of technology can be significant barriers. Therefore, this paper aims to contribute to the diffusion of asynchronous online focus groups as a research tool. |
