Summary:In waters close to Tefé and Coari, the main cities of the Middle Solimões River region in Amazonas State, hundreds of floating structures perform household, commercial, institutional and service functions. The purpose of this article is to understand the role of house boats in the urban lakes of these two cities for regional development and territorial integration. First, the various functions and structures of the house boats are identified and then a classification of these floating spatial forms is elaborated. The analysis points to which social and economic relations are useful or not for regional development and territorial integration in this part of the Brazilian Amazon.
