| Sumario: | This paper aims at presenting a reading proposition on two female characters in works written by Machado de Assis and translated into Spanish: Capitu, in the novel Dom Casmurro, and Conceição, in the short story Midnight Mass (A Missa do Galo). Choosing these two characters reveals a unique option to dive into Machado’s writing and translations: it is an entrance guided by riddle and innuendo. The comparative reading and analysis focused in these characters will be based on concepts such as Lefevere’s rewriting (2007) and Haroldo de Campos’s reimagination (1979). |
