Sumario:This article explores, through the issue of representation, changes and redefinitions in the relationship of institutions with social actors and the relationship of politics with Argentinean society at the end of the nineteenth century. The analysis focuses on a series of unsuccessful attempts of electoral reform from 1891. These attempts of reform would be, according to our hypothesis, the last attempts of the notabiliar world, to face, on its own terms, the deep crisis of legitimacy that had opened in 1890. In this way, the electoral law enacted in 1902 may be understood as an epilogue of the previous cycle rather than as a prologue of the next
