Those that were included were mostly formal variants of words in use and they had two characteristics: they were documented for the first time in this edition of the dictionary (others that had appeared before and later removed were reintegrated) and they are preserved even in the latest edition. This occurred at a time when the rehabilitation of archaisms was being promoted as a way to preserve tradition, promote proper language use, and counteract neologisms and loan words.Los arcaísmos han estado siempre presentes en el Diccionario de la Real Academia Española, y se ha procurado su conservación e incorporación. Destaca la duodécima edición por su abundante incremento al querer suplir la falta de un diccionario específico de arcaísmos. Los que se insertan son en su mayoría variantes formales de voces usuales. Tienen dos características: se documentan por primera vez en el diccionario en esta edición (otros habían aparecido antes y, eliminados después, se reintegran ahora) y se conservan hasta la última edición.
