In developing countries, among already known socioeconomic and cultural reasons, variations in management account for comparatively higher morbimortality rates, despite not being often based on current evidence. We have proof that ancient civilizations of China, Egypt and India have recognized and described preeclampsia as well as the bleak maternal and fetal prognosis it portends.En las últimas dos décadas no ha habido grandes avances en el conocimiento de los orígenes de la preeclampsia. Sabemos que los trastornos hipertensivos complican aproximadamente 5 a 10% de los embarazos(1) – aparentemente más en el Perú(2). Son complicaciones relacionadas con la preeclampsia el nacimiento pretérmino, la morbimortalidad materna y el riesgo a largo plazo de enfermedad cardiovascular materna y la enfermedad metabólica, tanto en la madre como en el niño(3). En los países en desarrollo, las variaciones en el manejo de la enfermedad, a menudo no basadas en las evidencias actuales, conducirían a una morbimortalidad comparativamente mayor(4), junto con las conocidas razones socioeconómicas y culturales en estas regiones.
